DRE State Coordinator - President, Oklahoma Association of DREs
Sgt. O’Bryant has been a police officer in the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area since 2010 and employed with The Oklahoma City Police Department since 2015. He was a founding member of the Oklahoma Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Advisory Board and was appointed as the Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) Coordinator for the State of Oklahoma in 2021. In 2023, the Director of The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office appointed Sgt. O’Bryant as the state coordinator for the Drug Recognition Expert Program. Sgt. O’Bryant championed the creation of the first full-time Oklahoma DRE State Coordinator position since the program’s inception in 1991. In this role, he oversees all impaired driving programs within The State of Oklahoma. Sgt. O’Bryant is the president of the Oklahoma Association of Drug Recognition Experts, a non-profit dedicated to providing training and oversight to DREs in The State of Oklahoma.
Sgt. O’Bryant is presently assigned to The Oklahoma City Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit. His duties require remaining up to date on the most recent changes to The International Association of Chiefs of Police’s (IACP) Drug Evaluation and Classification Program as well as program oversight for all SFST, ARIDE, and DRE programs throughout The State of Oklahoma. He is required to appear in court and provides expert testimony in the field of drug and alcohol impairment and impaired driving in all levels of the judicial system including federal, state, municipal, and civil proceedings. Sgt. O’Bryant has testimonial experience in major cases involving serious injury and fatality collisions, to include multiple fatality, critical injury, and officer involved fatality collisions.
Sgt. O’Bryant has received several awards while employed with The Oklahoma City Police Department. He was recognized by the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Greater Oklahoma City as The Mental Health Officer of the Month in both September and November of 2022. In April of 2024 he received a commendation from The Oklahoma City Police Department’s Chief of Police and a separate commendation from Canadian County Assistant District Attorney Austin Murrey for his professionalism, investigation, and expertise in the field of impaired driving throughout the prosecution of a fatal vehicle collision. In May of 2024 Sgt. O’Bryant was selected to receive The Oklahoma City Police Department’s Medal of Valor. The Medal of Valor is awarded to an officer of the Oklahoma City Police Department for exceptional bravery at imminent risk of serious bodily injury demonstrating exceptional courage by performing a voluntary course of action in an extremely dangerous situation.
